Anybody climbed any yet? If so - share the joy... My sources say that there is already lots in Korouoma but no surprise with that really, but what about near Helsinki - any news about Pyörämäki, Valkeala? Someone went to Kauhala last weekend but said there was nothing formed yet.
cheers
Toby.

Since last weekend at Kauhala a BIG tree has fallen over and is now resting along the crag. It doesn't effect the left hand icefall, but the slightly higher (and better) icefall on the right now has a tree across it about two thirds of the way up. At the moment you can still fit between the cliff and the tree, but as the ice gets thicker this not might not be possible. It really spoils the icefall (and the thin ice lines to the left)

so if any one has a chainsaw and public spirit...
Hopefully the tree might fall right to the ground but as all the branches become encased in the ice I guess it is unlikely.

Two weeks ago I toproped with a friend the ice boulder at Haukilahti exit alongside Länsiväylä and last week we toproped at the cliff by the H:linna-T:re motorway near Nurmijärvi. Both were too short/thin to place proper pro.

Drytooling/mixed in waasa this weekend. The rock is not suitable for nuts and friends, so we must wait a bit longer till ice get thick enough for ice pro. Walls are around 10 meters high, and clearly not as great as local boulders during summer. But if you are stuck aroud here -ice is worth a wisit.

Has the kauhala icefall been cleared or is the tree still there? Does anybody know who the landowner is? Is it privat property or owned by the state etc.

quote from sfnet.harrastus.kiipeily
"Jäätä löytyy mm. Kirkkonummen Kauhalasta (tien vierästä varsinaisesta
jääpaikasta). Siellä kuitenkin äskeisen ison myrskyn jälkeen on kaatunut
paljon puita ja yksi tukkipuu on kaatunut strategisesti erityisen väärään
paikkaan, oikeanpuoleisen ison jääseinämän päälle konkeloon. Ilmoitin
tilanteesta läheisen kartanon pehtoorille ja hän selvittää asiaa."
Some translation: the tree is still there, but some one at a nearby house has been informed and they are going to see what can be done(and who can do what, as it seems that it is on private land). The posts in sfnet.h.k are dated last evening (Sun 2.12)

It would be great if the tree could be removed if who ever owns the land doesn't object to its removal, I would imagine a tree that size would be valuable for timber. If the locals do remove it, climbers should be willing to say 'kiitos' by not parking their cars below the crag as it seems to annoy the locals (even though I saw a loaded tractor go past without difficulty). The car park (follow the signs) is normally snow-ploughed and there is also plenty of parking space back up by the junction as well.

The janitor of the mansion told us last saturday that he would be removing the tree soon. He was sorry for the delay because he has had other priorities.

Did anyone go to Kauhala last weekend? Has the tree been removed yet?
Anyone climbed at Nuuksio yet? Is it safe to cross the lake?
I was at Linnavuori two weeks ago and it was in good condition already, lots of ice and more forming. Also went to another place in Valkeala, only a few kms off the main road which had good ice as well.

The trees have been taken away, at least the big ones. There was still a smallish tree attached to the ice (it is cut but seems to be stuck in the ice). The upper branches of this tree are on the line of ascent but could easily be dealt with even with a saw a la the swiss army knife. Unfortunately we did not happen to have one of those with us. As for ice conditions the ice was rather thin leaving the options of treating the fall as a boulder or set up a top rope. I have no clue what this weeks cold weather has done to the fall.
