Terve!

I am quite new to this whole bouldering/climbing business and have some practical questions about how to best go about establishing/utilising sites within the metropolitan Helsinki area.

Basic background: There is a lovely large boulder sitting at the end of my street that I have been eyeing for a while. I understand that it is not kosher to just go and start climbing it... So, what is the best way to go about gaining access to it? (It is physically located in a small copse of trees next to an apartment block - so finding the owner of the building/land may be difficult.)

Any advice is greatly appreciated, especially if it can help prevent me from stepping on toes.

(Actually, in hindsight, it isn't so much a series of questions, but general suggestions that I'm looking for. Thanks!)

If the block is in middle of residential area and you think it doesn't bother anyone if you climb it, then i don't see why you should ask permission. In my opinion, you don't need permissions for every possible place.

Ville - Thank you for the reply. I just want to make sure that I'm not committing some cardinal sin before I go ahead. (As you indicate, common sense always rules.)

Climbing belongs to the "every-mans-rights". However, this does not apply to the protected areas (eg. Natura 2000). And, strictly speaking, climbing does not include cleaning/brushing the surface from moss or other dirt. If you want to be 100% sure that you're not violating any law, you can check out who owns the land from
"Kaupunkisuunnitteluvirasto" and then ask directly from the owner. The city usually doesn't mind. Good Climbing!
